Took a short trip down to Puerto Rico the past week. Didn't score the best waves ever but got a couple. Had some fun shooting photos again for the first time in about 7 months. The rental car lost a fender, Casey dislocated his shoulder and had to go to the E.R., there was a 2-3 foot long iguana living between the ceiling and roof over our (Jackie and I) bed, and Jackie saved a puppy named Kingsley from the streets of Isabella. How a print gets to you.

Below you can take a look at how a print gets to you (minus the editing and printing part)

All about quality and care.

First a signature on the back of the print with edition #

Then a signature and edition number on the matte in the front. This happens to be edition 2/25.

Peeling off the protection from the UV protected non glare acrylic.

Time to slide the acrylic,matte,print,and backboard into the frame.

Double checking everything looks good and there is no foreign bodies between the acrylic and matte/print

Follow the Light

Well tonight is the third annual Follow the Light Foundation awards ceremony held in memory of the great Larry "FLAME" Moore. It's been one year (and six days) since I was awarded the FTL grant for 2007.

What a dramatic ride it's been. I guess I will use this space to talk about what's happened in the past year for anyone visiting and wondering about what has been going on.

I proposed to spend the grant money on making a surf film about New York, telling of it's history and the people who are from NY, who surf, and where it has taken them...their journey. I, being known more for being a photographer, have a very solid background in film and film studies, I got my Bachelors in it. I had already made several short 16mm films and numerous video edits of surf in NY. I wanted to finally work on a feature...something big. My proposal is probably the reason I was awarded the grant in 2007. For more information on this check here: www.followthelightfoundation.org

It took me about a month before I purchased a video camera (which I had not previously owned) and began shooting. Unfortunately New York had the worst year of waves I could remember in surfing for 10 years now. Nonetheless I continued filming when it was two foot, or when it was 30 degrees out and onshore. Nothing stopped me pursuing this project. I put my all into this video and after a year of working on it I realized it came much further than I had previously thought. While I was filming for the New York Surf Documentary, I also began several other projects. One of them being an East Coast bodyboarding video titled "Cheeseburger Brains" which hopefully will be finished by 2010. Cheeseburger Brains will be all East Coast or East Coast riders and quite different than any other bodyboarding videos in the past.

I also quickly began a photography buisness (Matt Clark Photography LLC) and started my website www.clarkography.com From there I began selling Limited Edition Canvas prints of a select few of individually signed and numbered images which sold very well.

I also began printing Fine Art Limited Editions of my prints which are also individually signed, numbered, matted and framed.

I'm also lucky enough and forever thankfull to www.waveridersgallery.net for representing me as an artist. You can go there to purchase some of my photographic prints.

This had all been going on while I returned for one more year of postgraduate studies in Photography. While working on my photography degree I also began working on my first photography book titled "Delenda".

This past surf season, which I view as starting in September 07 and ending in August 08 has been BEAT. Terrible Hurricane season with basically 1 storm generating swell for us...Hurricane Noel, which was meh here in NY. Bertha had her run in 08 but it wasn't anything epic either. What happened to big burly hurricane surf? What happened to Rocktober? Where were the epic phantom swells? I'll keep my eyes facing foward.

I broke out of my cage today and went down to shoot some photos and video today at the beach. Looked fun but wasn't holding up right on a lot of them. Here's a couple shots.

Putting nature back is slowly forming.

I will continue this work until it is finished.

I'm starting new projects though as well.

Here's some of putting nature back, the two shown in a previous post got the cut in editing, and a new but similar stylistic approach was taken. So far it's a series of 12 images. Here's 5/12 not in order

I finished the first part of the project which was just for a final.
Here's my artists statement.

Photography is my outlet, my means of expression. Since high school my eyes have widened and I’ve taken in much more than what’s seen speeding through life at a hundred miles per hour. Photography has become the stepstool I use to gain all it is that I look to achieve, more answers for more knowledge and conveying my emotions and views.

My goal, through this body of work, is to create an awareness of the problems that have emerged through human impact on our natural surroundings. I see the complete disregard for what we once cherished. Fields, forests, sky, earth, and water have become casualties by the hand of man. We have derailed the balance. Through my art I intend to do my share, by subjugating the everyday person and commanding them to spend time deliberating the destruction taking place, some of which they’ve contributed to.

Through these photographs I am imparting nature’s tale of our deeds, the innocence of the wild lost, the fragility of ferality, and the tragedy we’ve created on our home. It’s through guilt that I choose to speak the truth. While not electing to tell the story through an obvious and descriptive manner, it’s with expression the story is told. The solemn reparation of nature, the active force in mending, and remedy carried out in minute doses is my interpretation of what is taking place in society at the moment. While we strive to sustain what little is left, we continue to express our deploration of all that has taken place with a half hearted attempt at the big fix. The subject in these photographs is my exhibition of all that I see being done and how those who are contributing to the mending feel towards those who aren’t. It’s my duty, because of my close relationship with nature, to speak through photographs, pressuring the viewer into contemplation of their actions or lack thereof.

So today is a big day for me in my opinion.
I am now a featured photographer in an online gallery selling my work.
I'm really excited about this. For anyone who is interested in prints it's very easy to order from them, they sell the print for the same amount as I do and you have the options to have mattes and frames added to your order. I actually just recieved my first print today as well and it's gorgeous. I want to push the "fine art paper" which is printed on Hahnemuhle photo rag. It's amazing paper and the prints really look beautiful.

I forgot that I had sent some images to popphoto.com to have critiqued a couple months back. I just typed in my name to see what came up under google images because I've been trying to get this blog to show up when you type my name in. Anyhow, these both came up and were reviewed by popphoto people. Pretty stoked to find them, I was laughing. The comments left by people who read the review were funny, the people hated them. Just goes to show what people who don't surf think about what I do. Haha Enjoy.
